Aikido is a Japanese martial art that was
created and developed by Morehei Ueshiba. He is also referred to as
O’Sensei or Great Teacher. This martial
art teaches self-defence. Throws and joint lock derived from Jujitsu and some
moves from Kenjutsu. Aikido does not focus on defending oneself by punching or
kicking the opponent but rather using the energy of the opponent to get him
away from you or gain control of him.
Although there are physical activities one
does not need brute strength to be able to practice Aikido. People of all ages,
both man and women can do this. Aside from the self-defence aspect, there is so
much more that Aikido can offer, not just physical benefits but also for the
mind and spirit.
The practice of Aikido is a good form of
exercise. It helps in weight loss and maintenance. It helps increase energy and
stamina. It improves flexibility and aids in muscle development. Overall body
coordination is improved through Aikido and the techniques it teaches.
Aikido does not only give importance to the
physical body but also the mind and the spirit. The training views the body and
mind as one, not separate. So whatever the condition of one affects the other.
This is the reason why Aikido aims to keep the mind and spirit healthy as well.
It helps in relaxing the mind, helping one cope with stress and improve focus.
The ability to concentrate is also improved as well as the power to stay in
control when faced with challenging situations. Aikido helps in developing self-confidence
to help a person when dealing with others.
The practice of Aikido helps a person
become both physically and mentally strong especially when faced with
difficulties in his surroundings. One becomes confident but not cocky. Aikido
is also known as “the way of harmony” or “the art of peace”. This is the reason
why Aikido has no competitions where medals can be won. It is believed to be
incompatible with the Philosophy of Aikido.
To get into Aikido is a way to achieve of
all these benefits at the same time enjoying yourself. Kids can greatly benefit
from this at such an early age. This is when they can best be taught especially
in their learning stage. If you want you, your child or anyone you now to get
into Aikido, first thing to do is to look for an Aikido centre. To do this, you
can go online and do a search for those in your area. For example, you can type
Aikido NSW if that is where you are located. You can then see a list of
websites of these Aikido centres. Choose a few and try to visit each one
personally. This way, you will see the place itself. You can even observe
classes and see how the teachers and students interact with each other. Once
you have made the choice you can register with them and start you first class.
Before the first class though, try to research more about this so you know what
to expect.
